Your questions about electric and hybrid car insurance, answered

What is electric auto insurance?

Insuring an electric vehicle is much like insuring a regular vehicle, but there are a few differences to keep in mind. Because electric vehicles have different machinery than gas-powered vehicles they may also cost more to insure. Electric vehicles are equipped with long-life batteries that can be pricey to repair if they’re damaged in a collision. But, while your eco-friendly car insurance may be more expensive in some ways, some companies and governments offer discounts and rebates for going green. Be sure to check whether you’re eligible for any electric vehicle insurance discounts before making your purchase.

How do I get insurance coverage for an electric car?

When it comes to car insurance, electric vehicles are treated much the same way as gas-powered vehicles. Most car insurance companies offer options for drivers looking to secure an electric car, and like we mentioned above many even offer rebates. Don’t forget to inquire about potential insurance discounts for your hybrid car or electric car when negotiating your policy.

Does insurance for electric cars cost more?

In short, it depends. Not every insurance company will evaluate your electric vehicle the same way and some may offer additional rebates on your car insurance for going green. That’s why it’s so important to compare the market before making a decision. You can do that on LowestRates.ca by entering your postal code in the form above. You’ll then be taken to a window where you can view the cheapest insurance rates for hybrid and electric cars from providers serving your area.

If you’re on the hunt for cheap electric car insurance, you could also try asking your insurance provider whether you’re eligible for any discounts on top of your green rebate. Keep reading to learn about the other discounts you may be able to qualify for.

What types of car insurance are there?

Even though you’re shopping for insurance for an electric vehicle, you’ll still have the same variety of car insurance types to choose from. See below for a description of all the different types of car insurance available throughout Canada, though not all are required in every province.

No-fault insurance: This is not a type of insurance you can choose to buy but rather a type of regulatory system used to oversee the auto insurance regime. It means that you’re required to go through your insurance company first before filing a lawsuit. However, your insurance company will allow you to file a lawsuit for damages that are not covered by your accident benefits insurance.

Third-party liability insurance: This type of insurance is mandatory across Canada. Liability insurance protects you against damages that you cause while driving. If you damage another vehicle or injure someone while driving, this type of coverage kicks in. This type of insurance is mandatory across Canada.

Accident benefits: This will pay for your medical expenses if you’re injured in an accident. It will include income replacement and any additional care required. This coverage is mandatory for drivers across Canada.

Direct compensation property damage: DCPD covers damage to the structure or the contents of your vehicle. It’s important to note that this coverage only applies in provinces where this type of insurance is mandatory and will only kick in if both drivers hold this type of coverage and you weren’t at fault. This coverage is available in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. It’s mandatory only in Ontario.

Specified Perils insurance: This type of car insurance only protects you against risks you specifically name in your policy. If it isn’t listed, you're not covered. This type of insurance is available across Canada but isn’t mandatory anywhere.

Comprehensive Insurance: This type of insurance is the opposite of specified perils. A comprehensive policy will cover you against all risks, except those specifically named in your policy - even events not related to driving. This type of insurance coverage is available everywhere in Canada but mandatory nowhere.

All-perils insurance: This type of insurance is a combination of specified perils and comprehensive to produce a middle ground, of sorts. All perils coverage protects your home and property against every risk, except those specifically listed in your policy. Whereas, the contents of your home are only protected for risks specifically named in your policy. This type of insurance is available across Canada but isn’t mandatory.

Uninsured motorist coverage: This will protect you in the event of an accident with a driver who does not hold car insurance, or a driver who does not hold sufficient insurance to cover damages. This coverage is mandatory everywhere in Canada except Alberta.

Collision insurance: This coverage protects specifically against damages sustained in a car accident. This insurance kicks in whether you collide with another vehicle or an object. This type of insurance is available everywhere but mandatory only in Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador and Saskatchewan.

Finding a great car insurance rate for your EV doesn’t have to be a struggle. Complete a quote today to find the best rates on electric car insurance on the market. Just like that.
